German organist and harpsichordist. Born in Leipzig. He suffered from visual impairment from an early age, and became blind while studying at the Leipzig Conservatory. From 1926, he served as assistant to his teacher G. Ramin (1898-1956) at the Thomaskirche, which is associated with Bach. In 1929, he became organist at the Friedenskirche in Frankfurt am Main, and in 1946, he became organist at the Dreikonigekirche in the same city. From 1938 to 1972, he was professor at the Frankfurt State High School of Music. He continued to work in Frankfurt, and attracted worldwide attention with his regular JS Bach concerts and lectures. He began recording all of JS Bach's organ works in 1947, and compiled them twice, in mono and stereo, as the Complete Organ Works of Bach (1947-1956, 1956-1971), which became one of the greatest achievements in the history of Bach performance. He is known for his clear and profound performances backed by academic research, and has made a major mark on Bach research, including the revision of "The Art of Fugue." He retired in 1977.
