1882‐1965
Iraqi politician. Born into a prominent Sunni family in Baghdad. Also known as Ghaylani. Became Minister of the Interior in 1925 and opposed the Anglo-Iraqi Treaty in 1930. Was Prime Minister in 1933 and Interior Minister from 1935 to 1936. During World War II, as a pro-German leader, he was supported by Amin al-Husaini, who was in exile in Iraq, and served as Prime Minister twice, from 1940 to 1941, but this pro-Axis government was overthrown by the British army's invasion of Iraq.
