In 1555, at the Imperial Diet of Augsburg, a treaty was concluded between Catholics and Lutherans to settle the religious conflicts that had arisen in Germany as a result of the Protestant Reformation. It was based on equal rights for both the old and new churches, but the Protestants were limited to the Lutheran Church that upheld the Augsburg Confession of Faith established by the Imperial Diet of 1530, and Calvinists were excluded. In principle, freedom of religion was decided by the feudal and city authorities, and dissatisfied residents were only allowed to move. → Related topics Augsburg | Treaty of Westphalia | Charles V | Thirty Years' War | Habsburg | Counter-Reformation | Ferdinand I Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
