Ouargla Governorate capital, which occupies the eastern half of the Sahara Desert in southeastern Algeria. An oasis town located about 480km south of the capital Algiers. Located at the center of desert traffic, it is one of the oldest towns in the Sahara Desert. It was occupied by the Islamic heresy Ibadi sect in the 10th century, and by Berbers and Black Africans in the 11th century. From 1872 to 1962, it was occupied by France and became its administrative center. The current town was built south of Fort Lut after 1928. It consists of five oases, but since the completion of a deep artesian well in 1956, palm plantations, orchards, and vegetable gardens irrigated by groundwater have expanded. The surrounding area is inhabited by the nomadic Chaamba people, but the population has increased recently due to its proximity to the oil base Hassi Messaoud. In the center of the old town, which is connected by an indoor road to protect against heat and robbery, livestock, carpets, basketry, etc. are traded. There is the Sahara Museum. Population: 81,721 (1987 estimate).

アルジェリア南東部，サハラ砂漠の東半分を占めるワルグラ県の県都。首都アルジェ南方約 480kmに位置するオアシスの町。砂漠交通の中心にあるため，サハラ砂漠最古の町の一つで，10世紀にはイスラム教の異端イバード派が，11世紀にはベルベル人とブラックアフリカ人が占拠。 1872～1962年フランスが領有，その行政中心地となる。現在の町はリュート砦の南に 28年以降建てられたもの。5つのオアシスから成るが，深い掘抜き井戸が 56年に完成して以来，地下水で灌漑されたヤシ園，果樹園，菜園が拡大した。周囲には遊牧民シャアンバ族が住むが，最近では石油基地ハシメサウドに近いため人口が増加した。暑さと略奪にそなえて屋内道で結ばれた旧市街の中心部では，家畜，絨毯，籠細工などが取引される。サハラ博物館がある。人口8万 1721 (1987推計) 。
