…By chance, during the great fire of Osaka in December 1707 (4th year of the Hoei era), a boat selling oysters defended the notice board at the west end of Koraibashi Bridge, and was granted a monopoly on the rivers of Osaka by the shogunate. From then on, the boats selling oysters and making oyster dishes were also granted the monopoly. At first, only boats from Kusatsu village had a monopoly on this business, but in the Kanpo era (1741-44), 14 boats from Niho Island (present-day Minami Ward, Hiroshima City) also obtained Kusatsu oyster stocks and began operating.
