Born: 24 November 1821, Kent
[Died] May 29, 1862. Damascus British historian. Due to his ill health, he was unable to receive much of a formal education, but he acquired knowledge through reading. He traveled to the European continent several times from 1840 to 1844, to Egypt from 1861 to 1862, and also to the Middle East, where he died of a fever on the way. He applied the method of natural science to history. His main work, History of Civilization in England (1857-61), was introduced to Japan in the early Meiji period. He was also famous as a skilled chess player.

Also called a buckle. A type of fastener used to fasten belts or shoes. A frame and a pin are attached to one end of the belt, and the other end is passed through the frame and the pin is inserted to secure it. Some belts do not have a pin, and the other end slides onto a bar attached to the center of the frame, while others have metal fittings on both ends of the belt that interlock together. As well as being a practical item, it is an ornament that is widely used on clothing, shoes, bags, hats, etc.

尾錠 (びじょう) ともいう。ベルトや靴を締める留め具の一種。ベルトの一方の端にフレームと針を取付け,他端をこのフレームに通し,針を差込んで固定させる。針がなく,フレームの中心についたバーに他端をスライドさせるもの,ベルトの両端に金具をつけ,これをかみ合せるものなどもある。実用品であると同時に,衣服,靴,かばん,帽子などに幅広く応用される装飾品。
