Born: 24 November 1821, Kent [Died] May 29, 1862. Damascus British historian. Due to his ill health, he was unable to receive much of a formal education, but he acquired knowledge through reading. He traveled to the European continent several times from 1840 to 1844, to Egypt from 1861 to 1862, and also to the Middle East, where he died of a fever on the way. He applied the method of natural science to history. His main work, History of Civilization in England (1857-61), was introduced to Japan in the early Meiji period.
