The Tale of a Woman Who Defended the Nation - Gokoku Onna Taiheiiki

Japanese: 護国女太平記 - ごこくおんなたいへいき

A chronicle-style novel from the mid-Edo period. Author unknown (volume 19 of "Koshi Yawa" states that he was a spy sent to Banshu as a police inspector during the Ako incident). Date of completion unknown (some versions have a preface dated 1717 (Kyoho 2), but the content includes facts from Kyoho 2 onward). 15 or 20 volumes. This is the most mature of the chronicle-style novels of the so-called Yanagisawa Incident. The fifth shogun, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, believed Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu's son Yoshizato to be his own son and tried to make him the sixth shogun, but his wife, Takatsukasa Ujinobu, killed Tsunayoshi, then committed suicide to prevent this from happening. This is where the book's title comes from.

江戸中期の実録体小説。筆者未詳(《甲子夜話》19巻には，赤穂浪士一件の際，播州へ隠密として遣わされた御小人目付とする)。成立年未詳(1717年(享保2)の序文をもつ書もあるが，内容の上では享保2年以降の事実を含んでいる)。15巻または20巻。いわゆる柳沢騒動の実録体小説中，もっとも成長をとげたもの。5代将軍徳川綱吉が柳沢吉保の子吉里をわが子と信じて，6代将軍にしようとしたのを，正室鷹司氏信子が夫綱吉を殺害，未然に防いで自害したのが書名の由来である。
