A technique in which minerals such as gold dust and tin dust contained in gravel are washed out and separated using a dish-shaped tool called a bowl with running water. This has been practiced since ancient times, but some places still use this method for small-scale mining activities. It was also used to select gold particles from large crushed rocks. In Japan, wooden bowls about 20 cm in diameter were often used, and some were painted with black lacquer to make the gold particles easier to see, but there are also examples where a sieve was used. In America and Australia, larger metal bowls are used. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
