A Laspeyres quantity index that shows trends in agricultural production, calculated by taking a weighted average of the production quantities of various agricultural products, with the production value in the base year as the weight. This index was first created in 1933 by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (now the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries), and showed the trends in production volume for each year thereafter, using the average production volume for the five years from 1924 to 1929 for 84 agricultural products as the base. The current agricultural production index is a Laspeyres quantity index for 154 products, including livestock products. The production value of each product in the base year is used as the weight, but the base year is changed every five years, and the indices are linked in the form of a chain index.
