Bloomers

Japanese: ブルーマーズ

A type of underpants for women and children. They are loose fitting with a tight waist and hem. They are used for exercise as they allow easy leg movement. They were so named because American women's liberation activist Amelia Bloomer recommended them in the mid-19th century. In Japan, they were adopted as knee-length gym wear, especially for female students, from the Taisho to Showa periods, and were called bloomers or bloomers. Even after World War II, panty-style ones continued to be used as gym wear for female students.

女性・子ども用の下ばきの一種。胴回り，裾(すそ)口をしぼったゆったりしたもの。足の動きが楽なので運動用に用いられる。19世紀中ごろ米国人の女性解放運動家アメリア・ブルーマー夫人が着用をすすめたのでこの名がある。日本では大正から昭和にかけて，とくに女子学生の膝丈の体操着として採用され，ブルマ，ブルーマーと呼ばれた。第２次大戦後も，パンティ形のものが引き続き女子学生の体操着として使用された。
