Watanabe Suiha

Haiku poet. Born in Tokyo. Real name Yoshi. Eldest son of Japanese painter Seitei. Dropped out of Nihon Chuo. Became a pupil of Naito Meisetsu at a young age, and in 1906 (Meiji 39), he founded Haikai Soushi. At the beginning of the Taisho era, he was active as a major author in the miscellany column of Hototogisu along with Murakami Kijyo and Iida Dakotsu, and his works were praised for being rich in elegant and aesthetic tones with Edo atmosphere, inheriting his father's bloodline. In 1916 (Taisho 5), he founded Kyokusui and continued to be active at the forefront of the Showa haiku world, and after his death, Kyokusui was passed on to his wife Keiko and second daughter Kyoko. In addition to collections of haiku such as "Suiha Kushu" (1915), "Hakujitsu" (1936), and "Fuji" (1943), he also wrote many essays.

俳人。東京の生まれ。本名義(よし)。日本画家省亭の長男。日本中学中退。若くして内藤鳴雪(めいせつ)の門に入り、1906年（明治39）『俳諧(はいかい)草紙』を創刊、大正初め『ホトトギス』雑詠欄に村上鬼城(きじょう)、飯田蛇笏(だこつ)らと主要作者として活躍し、その作品は父の血脈を継いで江戸情調の流麗な唯美的色調に富むとの評価を得た。16年（大正5）『曲水(きょくすい)』を創刊して昭和俳壇の第一線に活躍を続け、没後『曲水』は妻桂子、次女恭子に受け継がれた。『水巴句集』（1915）、『白日』（1936）、『富士』（1943）などの句集のほか、随筆の著書も多い。
