Pierre de Courtenay

... After Baudouin I was defeated and captured by the Bulgarian Emperor Kalojan at the Battle of Adrianople (1205), his successor, Henry I of Thrace (reigned 1206-16), defeated the Bulgarians and consolidated his control over Thrace, and also expanded his territory in Asia Minor by fighting the Greek Emperor Theodore I of Nicaea (Lascaris), thus increasing the power of the country. After Henry's death, however, his sister Yolande's husband, Pierre de Courtenay, who had been appointed his successor, was captured by the Greek Emperor Theodore I of the Epirus Empire in the Albanian mountains on his way to Constantinople from the west (1217). Under his son Robert de Courtenay (reigned 1221-28) and his brother Baudouin II (reigned 1228-61), both of whom were young, the Latin Empire rapidly declined. The Nicaean Empire took over Asia Minor, as well as Lesbos, Chios, and Samos, and in Thrace, the Nicaean Empire and the Epirus Empire narrowed their control to the area around Constantinople. In July 1261, the capital was taken by the Nicaean Emperor Michael VIII in a surprise attack, and the Latin Empire was destroyed.
