Trumpet - (valve) trumpet English

A type of lip-reed aerophone. In Hornbostel and Sachs' instrument classification, "trumpet" is used as a general term for lip-reed aerophones, but today it generally refers to a representative brass instrument used in orchestras, wind bands, jazz, etc.

The origin of the word trumpet is said to be the Greek word strombos, which means a type of shell. Cylindrical lip-reed instruments made of shells, wood, bamboo, bark, etc. are found all over the world. Primitive trumpets of this kind often have a mouthpiece at one end of the tube, but there are also many types with one end closed and a mouthpiece on the side of the tube. However, the direct ancestor of what is commonly known as the trumpet today is the nafil, which was introduced to Europe from the Islamic world after the 13th century. This was a lip-reed instrument with a long cylindrical straight metal tube and a morning glory tube, and it was eventually transformed into a long cylindrical tube with the tube bent into an S shape or other shape. The 16th to 18th centuries were the heyday of this type of long-tube natural trumpet. This had no tone-changing device, and the natural harmonics were adjusted by the lips and breath. Therefore, in order to more easily expand the range of sound choices, replacement tubes of various tube lengths were needed. To solve this inconvenience, instruments with sliding mechanisms and instruments with tone holes in the tube were created, but these had problems with sound quality, and eventually instruments with variable tone valves came into practical use in the early 19th century. However, at first, the long tube was equipped with valves, which made fingering for high notes complicated, and the simpler cornet became more widely used than the trumpet. At the end of the 19th century, the instrument was improved to have a shorter tube based on the cornet to make it more mobile, and it has remained in its current form.

Today, three valves are attached, and the length of the tube can be changed stepwise by operating the right hand to produce seven overtones. The most common are the B♭, C, and E♭ trumpets, but there are also other types such as the small B♭ (piccolo trumpet) which is one octave higher, and the Aida trumpet, which is made straight without being wound (played on stage in the triumphal procession scene of Verdi's opera "Aida").

リップリード（唇を発音源とする）の気鳴楽器の一つ。ホルンボステルとザックスの楽器分類法においては「トランペット」をリップリードの気鳴楽器の総称として用いているが、現在一般には管弦楽や吹奏楽、ジャズなどで用いられる金管楽器の代表的なものをさす。

　トランペットの語源はギリシア語で貝殻の一種をさすstrombosとされている。貝殻をはじめ木、竹、樹皮などを材質とした円筒形のリップリード楽器は世界各地に分布しており、この種の原始的トランペットは管の一端に吹き口が設けられているものが多いが、一端が閉じていて管の横に吹き口をあけたタイプも少なくない。しかし、現在一般にいうトランペットの直接の祖は、13世紀以降イスラム圏からヨーロッパに伝来したナフィールnafīlである。これは金属性の長い円筒状直管に朝顔管のついたリップ・リード楽器で、やがて長い円筒状管を基本とし、管をS字などに曲げたものに変形されていった。16～18世紀はこの種の長管自然トランペットの全盛期である。これは変音装置がなく、自然倍音を唇と呼気で調節するものであった。そこで、よりたやすく音の選択の幅を広げるためにはさまざまな管長の替え管を必要とした。この不便さを解消するためにスライド式にしたり、管に音孔をあけたものがつくられたが、音質の点で難があり、結局19世紀初頭に変音弁（バルブ）付きのものが実用化されるに至る。しかし、当初は長管にバルブが装置されたため、高音の運指が複雑化してしまい、より簡単なコルネットのほうがトランペットよりも広く用いられた。19世紀末により機動性を高めるべく、コルネットをモデルとして管の短いものに改良され、ほぼ今日の形となった。

　今日では三つのバルブがつけられ、右手の操作によって管長が段階的に変えられて7系列の倍音が出せるようになっている。B♭管、C管、E♭管がもっとも一般的で、そのほかに小形で1オクターブ高いB♭管（ピッコロ・トランペット）や、管を巻かずにまっすぐにつくったアイーダ・トランペット（ベルディのオペラ『アイーダ』の凱旋(がいせん)のシーンで舞台において演奏される）などもある。
