Born in the 33rd year of King Seonjo's reign. A painter at the Drawing Office. He painted landscapes and figures with a free-spirited brushwork. He visited Japan twice, in 1636 and 1647, as an attendant on the Korean missions, and became well-known in Japan. His pen name was Tenno. His pen names included Rentan and Suio.
