Respiratory stimulants

Japanese: 呼吸興奮薬 - こきゅうこうふんやく

A drug used to stimulate respiratory function in cases of respiratory depression caused by overdosing on hypnotics or other central nervous system depressants, neonatal asphyxia, or pulmonary ventilation failure caused by illness. Among central nervous system stimulants, dimorpholamine, dimefrine, nikethamide, doxapram, etc. are relatively selective for the respiratory center in the medulla oblongata and are used as central respiratory stimulants. On the other hand, lobeline, a component of Lobelia, stimulates chemoreceptors in the carotid artery and aorta, causing a reflex respiratory stimulant effect.

催眠薬その他の中枢神経抑制薬の過量使用による呼吸抑制や新生児仮死，疾病による肺の換気不全状態などの際に，呼吸機能を興奮させる目的で使われる薬物。中枢神経興奮薬のうちでも，延髄の呼吸中枢に対して比較的選択性の高い興奮薬として，ジモルホラミン，ジメフリン，ニケタミド，ドキサプラムなどがあり，中枢性呼吸興奮薬として使われる。一方，ロベリアの成分ロベリンは，頸動脈や大動脈にある化学受容器を刺激して反射性に呼吸興奮作用を現す。
