Arima Shinshichi

Japanese: 有馬新七 - ありましんしち
Arima Shinshichi

A patriot of the Satsuma clan in the late Edo period who supported the reverence for the Emperor and expulsion of foreigners. His given name was Masayoshi and he was called Takemaro. He was born on November 4, 1825 in Ijuin-go, Satsuma Province (Kagoshima Prefecture), but moved to Kajiya-cho when his father, Sakaki Masanao, inherited the surname Arima, a castle samurai. He devoted himself to both the arts and martial arts from an early age, and mastered Togo-ryu archery and Shinkage-ryu swordsmanship. He later went to Edo to study under Yamaguchi Kanzan, mastering the essence of Kimonology. In 1845 (Koka 2), he went to Kyoto and became friends with Umeda Unpin and others. In 1858 (Ansei 5), he plotted to correct the illegality of the shogunate's signing of the treaty without imperial sanction, but was ordered to return to Japan by the domain. He attempted to defect from the domain with over 40 comrades, including Okubo Ichizo (Toshimichi), but was persuaded to abandon the plan by the domain lord. In March 1862 (Bunkyu 2), he accompanied Shimazu Hisamitsu (father of the domain lord Tadayoshi) to Kyoto with his troops, but plotted to raise an army and overthrow the shogunate with extremists Maki Izumi and Tanaka Kawachinosuke, and on April 23, when he and his comrades met at Teradaya in Fushimi, he was killed by order of Hisamitsu's pacification envoys. He was 38 years old. His grave is at Daikokuji Temple in Takajo-cho, Fushimi Ward, Kyoto City. He preached about respecting the emperor and his friends called him "the modern Takayama Hikokuro."

Four years later, on January 23, 1866 (Keio 2), Sakamoto Ryōma was attacked and injured by a shogunate official at this inn. It was burned down during the Battle of Toba-Fushimi (1868), and the current building was later rebuilt. Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture ©Shogakukan ">
