Matsu Island

An island in the sea east of Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian Province, in southeastern China. Across the Matsu Strait lies Beigantang Island, also known as Nangantang Island. With an area of ​​23 square kilometers, it is the largest island in the Matsu Archipelago. The Matsu Archipelago belongs to Lianjiang County, Fujian Province, but Matsu Island is still under the control of the Taiwanese government, as the Nationalist government forces, who were driven out of the mainland, turned the entire island into a fortress and used it as a base for counterattacks on the mainland. The surrounding area is a good fishing ground for white croaker, pacific saury, and other fish.

中国南東部、福建省の省都福州の東海上にある島。馬祖海峡を隔てて北竿塘(ほくかんとう)島があり、別称を南竿塘島という。面積23平方キロメートル、馬祖列島のなかで最大の島である。馬祖列島は福建省連江(れんこう)県に属すが、馬祖島は、大陸を追われた国民党政府軍が全島を要塞(ようさい)化し、本土反攻の基地としており、現在も台湾政府の勢力下にある。付近はシログチ、サンマなどの好漁場である。
