A city in the Marche region of central Italy. Population 10,622 (1981). Located on a hill 127 meters above sea level overlooking the Adriatic Sea, its main industries are silk weaving, musical instrument manufacturing, and the manufacture and sale of sacred objects for pilgrims. According to legend, the house of the Virgin Mary in Nazareth was carried by an angel to Fiume in Dalmatia in 1291 to avoid destruction by the Turks, and three years later it was again miraculously carried to the Lauretum laurel grove near Recanati (from which the town's name originates).
