Onetti, Juan Carlos

Onetti, Juan Carlos
Born: July 1, 1909 in Montevideo
[Died] May 30, 1994, Madrid Uruguayan writer. He began his creative work at an early age and has a prominent place in contemporary Uruguayan literature. He graduated from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. He worked in journalism in Buenos Aires from 1943 to 1955, then returned to Montevideo, where he became director of the city's municipal library in 1957. His first published work, El pozo (The Well) (1939), is considered the first work of contemporary Latin American literature, depicting the alienation of urbanites who are unable to communicate with others. He published novels such as Tierra de nadie (No Man's Land) (1942), La cara de la desgracia (The Face of Misfortune) (1960), and Juntacadáveres (The Cave Bug) (1964). In his most famous work, La vida breve (1950), he created a fictional town called Santa Maria, a combination of Buenos Aires and Montevideo, and depicted the humble lives of ordinary citizens. He also wrote several works set in this town, including El astillero (1961), which symbolically depicts the collapse of Uruguay's society through an abandoned shipyard. The same characters often appear in his works, and instead of depicting the unique circumstances and local color of Latin America, he focuses on modern cities and the feelings and emotions of modern people living in isolation within them. Although he is said to have been influenced by Faulkner in terms of his technique, his works feature human relationships in which it is almost impossible to establish sympathy or solidarity, anti-heroes who are hardly heroes, and gray cities take the place of Faulkner's "South." In addition to his novels, he also published excellent collections of short stories, such as Un sueno realizado y otros cuentos (1951). He went into exile in Spain in 1976. He received the Uruguayan National Literature Prize in 1963 and the Cervantes Prize in 1980.
