Born: June 7, 1897, Budapest [Died] July 30, 1970. Cleveland. American conductor born in Hungary. Started out as a pianist and composer, and later switched to conducting. Began working as conductor at the Strasbourg Opera in 1917, and was active in Prague, Darmstadt, and other cities. Was first conductor at the Berlin State Opera from 1924 to 1929, during which time he was also appointed professor at the Berlin Music School in 1926. Moved to England in 1933, where he conducted the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and from 1937 to 1939 was principal conductor of the Scottish Orchestra. Moved to the United States in 1939 due to World War II, and became principal conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra in 1946, raising the orchestra to one of America's leading orchestras. Regarded as America's greatest conductor. His repertoire is wide, from classical to contemporary. cell |
