The nasal septum is the partition that separates the left and right nasal cavities, and is composed of the nasal septum cartilage in the front, the ethmoid vertical plate and vomer bones in the back, and the mucous membrane that covers them. A hole in this is called a nasal septum perforation. It most often occurs after surgery to correct a deviated nasal septum, but can also occur in association with syphilis, tuberculosis, collagen diseases that cause vasculitis, such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and Wegener's granuloma.

鼻中隔は左右の鼻腔を境するしきりで，前方の鼻中隔軟骨と後方の篩骨（しこつ）鉛直板，鋤骨（じよこつ）などの骨と，それをおおう粘膜で構成されている。これに穴があいた状態を鼻中隔穿孔という。鼻中隔彎曲（わんきよく）症を矯正するために手術をした後に起こることが最も多く，ほかに，梅毒，結核や，全身性エリテマトーデス(SLE)をはじめとして血管炎を起こす膠原病（こうげんびよう），ウェゲナー肉芽腫などに伴って起こる。
