Lorestan (English spelling)
Luristan (also called Luristān). Name of a region in Iran. (1) In the broad sense, it means "land of the Luli people" and refers to a historical region that stretches 650 km southeast from the Iraqi border and Bakhtaran Province to the lowlands of Lorestan Province, Ilam Province, and Khuzestan Province, with a width of 160 to 230 km. Most of the inhabitants are nomadic. The Luli people are an indigenous tribe with a strong mix of Iranian and Arab blood and speak a Persian dialect. This region is famous for the discovery of archaeological remains dating from around 260 BC to around 800 AD through excavations since 1929. (2) A province in the central-western part of Iran. Its capital is Khorramabad. It borders Bakhtaran Province to the northwest and Markazi Province and Hamadan Province to the northeast, and has developed rapidly since the Trans-Iranian Railway and the Tehran-Khorramshahr Highway passed through it. The inhabitants of the region engage in agriculture and livestock farming. The area is 28,560 km2 and the population is 1,367,029 (1986).

ルリスターン Luristānともいう。イランの地方名。 (1) 広義には「ルル人の地」の意で,イラク国境とバーフタラーン州からロレスターン州,イラーム州,フージスターン州の低地まで南東に 650km,幅 160~230kmに広がる歴史的地域をさす。住民の多くは遊牧生活である。ルル人は先住の種族で,イラン系とアラブ系の血が強く混り,ペルシア方言を用いる。なおこの地は 1929年以来の発掘によって,前 260年頃から紀元 800年頃にいたる考古学上の遺物の発見によって有名。 (2) イラン中央西部の州。州都はホッラマーバード。北西でバーフタラーン州,北東でマルカジー州とハマダーン州に接し,イラン縦貫鉄道,テヘラン-ホラムシャフル間幹線道路が通り,急に発展してきた。住民は農業と牧畜を営む。面積2万 8560km2。人口 136万 7029 (1986) 。
