...After that, he created a new character with a style that was common in American cities at the time, a gray flannel suit, a straw hat, and round glasses (later becoming his trademark called "Lloyd glasses"), and broke away from the image of being a Chaplin imitation. He then made a contract with Pathé and Paramount, and produced a series of Lloyd comedies, such as the feature-length films "Safety Last" (1923) and "The Freshman" (1925), which featured righteous young men as the protagonists, and which were thrilling in their ideas, structure, and light tempo rather than in terms of "art" as a comedy. These come to represent the optimism of the typical American middle-class man. At times, he was more popular than Chaplin and Keaton, but his popularity declined with the advent of the talkie era. He made "Lyd's Feet" (1930) and "Lyd's Adventure" (1932), but he was forced to retire in the 1940s due to a gap between his work and the demands of the times. ...
