Lothringen in German. A region or administrative district (region) in northeastern France. It consists of four departments: Vosges, Meurthe-et-Moselle, Moselle, and Meuse. Its capital is Nancy. It is a plateau stretching from the eastern part of the Paris Basin to the western slope of the Vosges Mountains. It is a crossroads between Luxembourg and Burgundy, and between Germany and France, and its ownership has changed hands many times since ancient times. From the end of the 13th century, the power of the French kings gradually spread, and it escaped the control of the German emperors, and in 1766 it became French territory. After the Franco-Prussian War (1871) and World War I (1919), part of it (now the Moselle department) became German territory along with Alsace, and during World War II from 1940 to 1944, the whole area was under German occupation. It was a major heavy industrial region in France due to its abundant iron ore and coal, and developed into an important economic zone, especially from the 1960s. Minette-type iron deposits have developed from Lorraine to Luxembourg and are characterized by oocyte-like or earthy limonite.

ドイツ語ではロートリンゲン Lothringen。フランス北東部の地方，また地方行政区の地域 (レジオン) 。ボージュ，ムルトエモーゼル，モーゼル，ムーズの4県から成る。中心都市はナンシー。パリ盆地の東部からボージュ山脈の西斜面まで広がる高原地帯で，ルクセンブルクとブルゴーニュ，ドイツとフランスの間の十字路にあたり，古くからしばしば領有が変った。 13世紀末から次第にフランス王の勢力が浸透し，それまでのドイツ皇帝の支配を脱して，1766年にはフランス領。普仏戦争後 (1871) から第1次世界大戦後 (1919) までは，一部 (現モーゼル県域) がアルザス地方とともにドイツ領となり，また第2次世界大戦中 1940～44年には全域がドイツの占領下にあった。豊富な鉄鉱石と石炭によりフランスの主要な重工業地域をなし，特に 60年代から重要な経済圏として発達。ロレーヌ地方からルクセンブルクにかけてミネット型鉄鉱床が発達し，魚卵状または土状の褐鉄鉱が特徴である。
