Ceramic pillow - Tochin

A ceramic pillow. It is also called a porcelain pillow or a ceramic pillow, and depending on the color, it is also called a celadon pillow or a white porcelain pillow, and there are many shapes and types. It was introduced from China long ago, and in the medieval collection of tales "Jikkinsho" (completed in 1252), there is an article about the Minister of the Right, Tokudaiji Kintsugu, giving a ceramic pillow in the shape of a lion to his wife. In the Edo period, the hard, cool feel of this pillow made it popular among literati, and it was widely used for naps.

陶磁製の枕(まくら)。磁枕、陶磁枕などともいい、色によって青磁枕、白磁枕などの称もあり、形状・種類ともに甚だ多い。古く中国から渡来したもので、中世の説話集『十訓抄(じっきんしょう)』（1252成立）にも、右大臣の徳大寺公継(きんつぐ)が獅子(しし)の形をした陶枕を女房のもとへ贈った、との記事がみられ、江戸時代には、その硬く、ひんやりとした感触が文人の間で喜ばれ、昼寝などに広く愛用された。
