A French female painter. Born in Paris as an illegitimate child. In 1902, she began taking classes in porcelain painting, and two years later, she enrolled at the Humbert School of Art, hoping to become a painter herself. There, she learned academic realism techniques and was favored by Braque. In 1907, she met Picasso at a gallery on the Rue de Lafitte, and through him she had a fateful encounter with the poet Apollinaire. Her turbulent love affair with Apollinaire lasted for five years, and was crucial to Laurencin's artistic development. Apollinaire wrote books actively supporting Cubist painters, while Laurencin broke away from traditional painting methods and developed a Cubistic style in the midst of this most avant-garde painting movement of the time. Their relationship is depicted in Henri Rousseau's portrait, "The Muse Inspiring the Poet." However, their love eventually fell apart, which marked the start of her own path. In 1914, she married the German Baron von Betchen in Paris, but World War I broke out shortly thereafter. Laurencin, who had become a German through the marriage, was forced into exile and spent the next five years in exile in Spain. After the war, she moved to Germany, but in 1921 she divorced the Baron and returned to Paris, where she regained peace of mind. She continued to paint feminine worlds in tones of rose, blue, and gray, and died in Paris.
