A city in the southeastern part of Jeollanam-do, South Korea. It has an area of 907.25 square kilometers and a population of 265,724 (2000). It was promoted to a city in 1949 and merged with Seungju-gun in 1995. It is at the junction of the Jeolla Line and the Gyeongjeon Line, and the junction of the Honam Expressway and the Namhae Expressway, and is a distribution center for produce from the Honam and Gyeongnam regions. Taking advantage of the relatively warm climate in the surrounding area during the winter, vegetables are actively cultivated in vinyl greenhouses. An industrial complex has been developed in the northern part of town, and the food industry is thriving. The famous Songgwangsa Temple and Seonamsa Temple are nearby.
