A city in the southeastern part of Jeollanam-do, South Korea. It has an area of ​​907.25 square kilometers and a population of 265,724 (2000). It was promoted to a city in 1949 and merged with Seungju-gun in 1995. It is at the junction of the Jeolla Line and the Gyeongjeon Line, and the junction of the Honam Expressway and the Namhae Expressway, and is a distribution center for produce from the Honam and Gyeongnam regions. Taking advantage of the relatively warm climate in the surrounding area during the winter, vegetables are actively cultivated in vinyl greenhouses. An industrial complex has been developed in the northern part of town, and the food industry is thriving. The famous Songgwangsa Temple and Seonamsa Temple are nearby.

韓国（大韓民国）、全羅南道(ぜんらなんどう／チョルラナムド)南東部にある都市。面積907.25平方キロメートル、人口26万5724（2000）。1949年、市に昇格。95年、昇州郡と統合。全羅線と慶全線の交差点、湖南高速道路と南海高速道路の分岐点で、湖南と慶南地方の産物の集散地。付近では冬の間、比較的温暖な気候を利用してビニルハウスで盛んに野菜の促成栽培をしている。町の北部に工業団地が造成されており、食料品工業が発達している。近くに有名な松広寺、仙岩寺がある。
