Adamaoua Plateau - Adamaoua Highlands (English name)

A plateau lying east to west in the center of Cameroon, Central Africa. Its elevation is 1,000 to 1,500 meters. Its bedrock is made of granite, but most of its surface is covered by lava flows that erupted in the Cretaceous period, and it is dotted with trachyte and other domes. It is also known as the "Castle of Water" because the main rivers that flow through Cameroon originate here. The vegetation is wooded savanna, and cattle grazing is common. Its name comes from Adama, a chief of the Fulbe people who conquered the region in the early 19th century.

中部アフリカ、カメルーンの中央部に東西に横たわる高原。標高1000～1500メートル。基盤は花崗(かこう)岩類よりなるが、地表の大半は白亜紀に噴出した溶岩流に覆われ、粗面岩などの円頂丘が点在している。カメルーン国内を流れる主要河川がここに発するので「水の城」の名もある。植生は樹木のあるサバンナで、牛の放牧が盛んである。名称は19世紀初頭にこの地域を制覇したフルベ人の首長アダマにちなむ。
