A highly liquid deposit held in a bank that can be withdrawn at any time and serves as a means of payment. The name was given to it because certificates of deposit, which are self-addressed debt certificates issued by private banks, function as a form of payment despite being a deposit, and thus function as currency. It is the counterpart to cash currency, and increases mainly through credit creation by banks. Demand deposits such as current accounts and ordinary savings accounts fall into this category, and serve as a means of payment and a means of storing general real purchasing power, functioning in the same way as cash currency. Large transactions between companies are handled by transfers between bank deposit accounts via the exchange of checks, and are used in this case. Credit card payments for households are also made in the same way. [Kunihiko Kaneko] [Reference] | |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
