Born: February 18, 1885 in Paris
Died May 5, 1954. Paris. French sculptor. Initially worked in interior design, then switched to fine arts. He was interested in Cubism, and associated with Picasso and Braque, developing Cubist sculpture. He participated in the "Section d'Or." His early works, which use a variety of materials and are composed of surfaces that deny volume, are counted among the first abstract sculptures of the 20th century. From the 1920s, he pursued curvaceous forms within the female form, and his simplified forms and soft curves showed a new direction in contemporary sculpture. His representative works include "Head" (Museum of Modern Art, New York).
