From the ancient Greek word meaning "girlfriend" or "mistress," it was used to describe cultured courtesans in contrast to ordinary prostitutes (pornai). Hetaira (singular) began to appear in Ionia and mainland Greece around the 7th century BCE, and in the classical period, port cities such as Athens and Corinth were famous for the number and quality of their hetaira. Hetaira, on the other hand, were not found in Sparta. The association of hetaira, skilled in music and dance and often well versed in literature, art, and philosophy, was not considered vulgar, and they served as hostesses at banquets where wives and daughters could not be present.
