...During the Jōkyō and Genroku periods (1684-1704), Dairi Hagoita, with flashy depictions of men in robes and women with long hair, became popular. During the Bunka and Bunsei periods (1804-30), Oshie Hagoita, with Oshie pasted on one side, were made in Edo, and gorgeous ones with portraits of actors and the like became popular, with larger ones being sold commercially as good luck charms and decorations. The Tokyo Annual Events from the end of the Meiji period notes that there were hagoita ranging from normal (1 shaku 2 sun) to Kohira, Ohira, Mago, and Shakuhachi (about 3 shaku 5 sun), but that geisha houses had ones that were about 3 to 5 shaku in size. ...

…また貞享・元禄時代(1684‐1704)には衣冠の男と垂髪の女を派手に描いた内裏(だいり)羽子板が盛んになった。文化・文政期(1804‐30)には押絵を片面に貼りつけた押絵羽子板が江戸でつくられ,役者の肖像などを描いた豪華なものが人気を呼び,縁起物,飾物として大きなものも市販されるようになった。明治末の《東京年中行事》には並物(1尺2寸)から,小平(こひら),大平,孫,尺八(3尺5寸くらい)まであるが,芸妓屋などでは3~5尺くらいのものがあると記している。…
