A battle between the Wada and Hojo clans took place in Kamakura on May 2-3, 1213. Wada Yoshimori was a meritorious vassal of the Kamakura Shogunate and held great influence as the head of the Samurai-dokoro, but after the death of the first Shogun, Minamoto no Yoritomo, he began to oppose the Hojo clan, whose influence had been growing. Relations between the two clans worsened when Yoshimori's nephew, Tanenaga, was punished for being an accomplice in a conspiracy by Izumi Chikahira that was discovered in February of the same year. Yoshimori talked to his relatives, the Miura clan, and his relatives by marriage, the Yokoyama clan, and tried to overthrow the Hojo clan by gaining many allies in Sagami and other areas. However, at the start of the war, the Miura clan broke their pact and sided with the Hojo clan, and the Hojo clan supported the third Shogun, Minamoto no Sanetomo, and gathered many vassals, so the battle was decided in two days, the Wada clan was destroyed, and the Hojo clan gained power.
