Araragi

A tanka magazine. After the discontinuation of "Ashibi," which was a successor to Masaoka Shiki's Negishi Tanka Society, it merged "Araki" (first published in 1908) by Kesshin Warabi and Sachio Ito with "Himura" by Akahiko Shimagi and others to relaunch in 1909 as a tanka magazine centered on Sachio. However, from around 1910 Akahiko, Mokichi Saito, Kenkichi Nakamura, and Chigashi Koizumi were keenly aware of the trends of the times and actively interacted with various schools of tanka, which led to conflicts with Sachio. After Sachio's death in 1913, Akahiko and Mokichi proceeded to develop a theory of sketching that allowed for sensual and symbolic expression, which, along with Manyoshugi, became a distinctive feature of the school. After Akahiko's death (26), Mokichi took over the magazine and it became more ideological, and after Mokichi's death in 1953, Yasuyoshi Gomi took over as editor. It was a representative magazine in the poetry world for a long time, but due to the aging of its executives, it ceased publication with the December 1997 issue.

短歌雑誌。正岡子規の根岸短歌会の流れをくむ『馬酔木 (あしび) 』の廃刊後，蕨真 (けっしん) ，伊藤左千夫の起した『阿羅々木』 (1908創刊) と島木赤彦らの『比牟呂』を合併し，左千夫を中心とする歌誌として翌 1909年より再出発したもの。しかし 10年頃から赤彦，斎藤茂吉，中村憲吉，古泉千樫らは時代の風潮を鋭敏に感受し積極的に歌壇の諸派と交流して左千夫との対立がみられた。 13年に左千夫が没してから，赤彦，茂吉による官能的，象徴的表現を許容する写生理論の形成に進み，万葉主義とともに同派の特色となった。赤彦の死 (26) 以後，茂吉へ受継がれて思想性を増し，53年の茂吉の死後は五味保義が編集を担当した。長く歌壇を代表する雑誌であったが，幹部の高齢化などにより 97年 12月号で終刊。
