A national university in Rome, Italy. It was founded in 1303 by Pope Boniface VIII (reigned 1294-1303) as the city's university, Studium urbis. From the beginning, it was known for teaching law and liberal arts subjects, but overall it was not doing well, so in 1431, Pope Eugenius IV (c. 1383-1447, reigned 1431-1447) set out to rebuild the university. Even after that, the university's development often stagnated due to political unrest and other reasons. It is said that the university truly gained its status as a central university in Italy after the establishment of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861. It was then moved to Città Universitaria, a university city built near Termini Station, in 1935. It has 12 faculties, including law, political science, economics, demography and statistics, literature, psychology, science, sociology, engineering, architecture, medicine, and pharmacy, as well as two vocational schools, one for aerospace engineering and one for training curators and librarians. Its affiliated research facilities include the National Institute of Advanced Mathematics. As a result of the rapid expansion of higher education in the 1960s, it now has about 4,060 full-time faculty members and about 160,000 students (1997), making it the country's largest institution of higher education. There are two other universities in Rome, called "Tor Vergata" and "Tre", which are completely separate universities. Italian national universities are named after the city in which they are located. In the case of Rome, the names of the three universities overlap, so they are differentiated by adding more specific place names and the order in which they were founded. "La Sapienza", which is the name of the University of Rome in this article, is the name of a place in central Rome.
