Born: January 22, 1916 in Angers
[Died] May 22, 2013. French composer. Born into a family of many painters and musicians, he entered the Paris Conservatory in 1933 and won the Prix de Rome in 1938. In 1942 he got a job at the Paris Opera, but after World War II he worked for the French National Radio until 1963. He taught composition at the École Normale de Musique de Paris from 1961 to 1970, and at the Paris Conservatory from 1970 to 1971. She has composed many pieces for specific performers and commissioned works, including her Symphony No. 2 "Le Double" (1959), which features a dual orchestral and chamber music arrangement, "Five Variations" (premiered in 1965), Cello Concerto "To a Faraway Land" (1970), String Quartet "Thus Is the Night" (1977), Orchestral Work "Sounds, Intervals, Movements" (1978), Violin Concerto "Tree of Dreams" (1985), "Correspondence" for soprano and orchestra (premiered in 2003), and "Hours, Grand Horloge" (premiered in 2007). While influenced by Claude Debussy, Albert Roussel, Maurice Ravel, and even jazz, her style is characterized by her own unique modern style, full of mystical sensations. He received the National Music Award in 1967 and the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize in 2005. He was awarded the Legion of Honor and became an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1981.
