A former town in Kinosaki County in northern Hyogo Prefecture. It lies in the Takeno River basin and faces the Sea of Japan. The main settlement developed around a port that once prospered through shipping, and is served by the San'in Main Line and the Tajima Coast Road. The coast is one of the best swimming beaches in the Kansai region, and the Nekozaki Peninsula is home to Kashima Park, where monkeys are allowed to roam freely. It is part of the San'in Coast National Park. In April 2005, it was incorporated into Toyooka City along with Kinosaki Town, Hidaka Town, Izushi Town, and Tanto Town in Kinosaki County. 兵庫県北部,城崎(きのさき)郡の旧町。竹野川流域を占め,日本海に臨む。主集落はかつて海運で栄えた港を中心に発達,山陰本線,但馬(たじま)海岸道路が通じる。海岸は関西有数の海水浴場で,猫崎半島にはサルを放し飼いする賀島公園もあり,山陰海岸国立公園の一部。2005年4月城崎郡城崎町,日高町,出石郡出石町,但東町と豊岡市へ編入。102.79km2。5924人(2003)。
