Born: September 13, 1885 in Beira Alta, Calégaldata, Boza
Died: May 27, 1963. Lisbon Portuguese novelist. A leading figure in Romanticism. In 1907, he was baptized by revolutionary ideas in Lisbon and imprisoned. After escaping prison, he went into hiding in Paris, where he wrote his first collection of short stories, Jardim das Tormentas (1913). He returned to Brazil in 1914 and continued his literary activities, but came into conflict with the new government and was exiled in 1927. After returning to Brazil, he continued to be active in literary activities while always maintaining an anti-government stance. In 1952, he visited Brazil and was awarded the Order of the Southern Cross. His major works include the short story Estrada de Santiago (22), the novels A Via Sinuosa (18), Lápides Partidas (45), A Casa Grande de Romarigães (57), and Quando os Lobos Uivam (58), as well as biographies, essays, and fairy tales.

Ribeiro, Tomás Antonio

Died: February 6, 1901. Portuguese poet from Lisbon. After graduating from the Faculty of Law at the University of Coimbra, he became a lawyer. In 1862 he served as a member of the Chamber of Deputies and vice-president of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences. He also published the magazines Repúplica, O Imparcial, and A Opinião as a journalist. His representative works include the epic poem Dom Jaime (1862), which tells of the decline of Spanish rule over Portugal, and the ultra-romantic A Judia. Other works include Vésperas (80) and Dissonâncias (90).

Died November 27, 1941. Lisbon Portuguese novelist. Dropped out of preparatory medical school. From a young age, he was involved in the labor movement, became a Marxist, and was imprisoned for a railway strike. He established his literary reputation with his debut novel, A Catedral, which he published while in prison. He later converted to Catholicism and devoted himself to writing. His major works include A Planície Heróica (1927), Vida e Morte de Madre Mariana Alcoforado (The Life and Death of the Nun Mariana Alcoforado), A Colina Sagrada (The Sacred Hill), and Batalha nas Sombras (The Battle in the Shadows).

[Died] November 1, 1890. Santos Brazilian novelist and linguist. He was active in the Republican government. He published several newspapers in Sorocaba, São Paulo State. He was a teacher of rhetoric in Rio de Janeiro. His historical novel Padre Belchior de Pontes (1876-77) attacked the Jesuits and Catholicism, and his representative work A Carne (88) was a controversial naturalistic novel depicting erotic love. His other works include Gramática Portuguesa (81).

Died in 1552. Portuguese poet and prose writer from Lisbon. He became the founder of Portuguese bucolicism (pastoralism) through his emotional pastoral poetry. His representative works include the pastoral novel Livro das Sandadas (1554-57), the autobiographical story Menina e Moça (54), Eclogas (54), and Trovas de Dous Pastores (30).

Ribeyro, Julio Ramón

[Died]1994.
Peruvian novelist. His works include Crónica de San Gabriel (1960) and Los geniecillos dominicales (The Little Devils of Sunday) (1966), as well as many other short stories. He is considered second only to Vargas Llosa in literary value.
