crucifix

…A form of execution widely used in the ancient Mediterranean region, also known as crucifixion. It was mainly used on political prisoners, thieves, slaves, and in the Roman Empire on criminals who did not have citizenship. The prisoner was nailed to a stake or tied with a rope and tortured (by flogging, etc.). Historically, the most famous examples are the execution of 3,000 political prisoners in Babylon by Darius I of Persia in 519 BC and the execution of Jesus of Nazareth outside Jerusalem around 30 AD.
