This award was established by Colbert and is given to young French artists. It entails a three-year study abroad program at the French Academy in Rome (since 1803 at the Villa Medici). It has continued in various forms since 1663. It is in the form of a competition. For example, in the painting category, those who pass the first examination are required to make a study of a theme given by the Academy in an isolated location within four days. They are then to complete this into a large-scale work within three months. The themes are taken from mythology, the Bible, allegory, etc. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
