The seven hills on the east bank of the Tiber River that formed the foundations of ancient Rome: Quirinal, Viminal, Esquilinus, Caelius, Palatine, Aventine, and Capitoline (Capitol). In the 8th to 7th centuries BC, the Latins on the Palatine Hill and the Sabines on the Quirinal Hill formed the city-state of Rome, and the Capitoline Hill in between became a fortress and the lowlands at its base became a forum (square).
