Henry van de Velde

Belgian Art Nouveau architect and designer. Born in Antwerp, he initially studied painting. He first experimented with Art Nouveau designs full of organic curves, including furniture and tableware, for his own house in Brussels (1895). This caught the eye of art historian J. Meier-Graefe and art dealer S. Bing, who invited him to exhibit his furniture at Bing's shop in Paris. He was then invited to Germany, where he designed the Volkwang Museum in Hagen (1902), the School of Applied Arts in Weimar (1907), and the Model Theatre at the Deutsche Werkbund Exhibition in Cologne (1914).

ベルギー出身のアール･ヌーボーの建築家，デザイナー。アントワープ生れ。はじめ絵画を学ぶ。まずブリュッセルの自邸(1895)で家具･食器類まで含め，有機的曲線に満ちたアール･ヌーボーのデザインを試みる。これが美術史家マイアー･グレーフェJ.Meier‐Graefeと美術商ビングS.Bingの目にとまり，招かれてパリのビングの店に家具類を出展。ついでドイツに招かれ，ハーゲンのフォルクワング美術館(1902)，ワイマール工芸学校(1907)，ケルンのドイツ工作連盟博モデル劇場(1914)を手がける。
