1863‐1957 Belgian Art Nouveau architect and designer. Born in Antwerp, he initially studied painting. He first experimented with Art Nouveau designs full of organic curves, including furniture and tableware, for his own house in Brussels (1895). This caught the eye of art historian J. Meier-Graefe and art dealer S. Bing, who invited him to exhibit his furniture at Bing's shop in Paris. He was then invited to Germany, where he designed the Volkwang Museum in Hagen (1902), the School of Applied Arts in Weimar (1907), and the Model Theatre at the Deutsche Werkbund Exhibition in Cologne (1914).
