1880‐1949 American statistician, physical chemist, and mathematical biologist. Born in Austria, he was educated in Europe and moved to the United States. While working for a chemical company and other companies, he began simultaneously researching the mathematics of population growth and chemical reactions in 1907. In 1911, he published a paper that provided the foundations of modern mathematical demography, and continued to study mathematical models in the fields of epidemiology and ecology. In 1920, when he was invited to Johns Hopkins University, he presented mathematical models of a chemical reaction system that continues to oscillate without damping, and of an ecological system consisting of plants and herbivores, the latter of which became as famous as the work of V. Volterra (1860-1940). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
