Kitadaito Island

Japanese: 北大東島 - きただいとうじま
Kitadaito Island

Located 360 km east of Okinawa Island, Okinawa Prefecture, it is one of the Daito Islands and the easternmost island in the prefecture. It is the main island of Kitadaito Village, with an area of 11.94 square kilometers. The entire island is made of Ryukyu limestone, and is a low-lying island with a maximum elevation of 74 meters (Ojinguyama). The center of the island is lower than the periphery, forming a basin-like topography, and it is world-famous as a typical uplifted atoll island along with the neighboring Minamidaito Island. It was first developed in the 1890s, and is one of Japan's inhabited islands with a relatively short history. Until World War II, it prospered due to the production of phosphate ore. After that, it became a monoculture area for sugarcane, but in recent years it has been rotated with potatoes. There are flights and sea routes from Naha, but it is one of the most isolated islands in Japan. Population: 510 (2009).
