Carex (English spelling)

Japanese: スゲ(菅) - スゲ(英語表記)Carex; sedge
Carex (English spelling)
A perennial plant of the Cyperaceae family, a general term for the genus Carex. There are many species, distributed widely from temperate to frigid zones, especially in the cool temperate to frigid zones and highlands of the Northern Hemisphere, with over 2,000 species. They grow everywhere, including in mountains, grasslands, and roadsides, and about 200 species are known in Japan. Many of them have well-developed rhizomes, and the aboveground stems (culms) are triangular in cross section, with stems and leaves on each side, so when viewed from directly above, the leaves are arranged in three rows. During the flowering season, the flower stalks grow from the linear space between the leaves and produce spikes. Male flower spikes are usually formed at the top and female flower spikes at the bottom. Male flowers have three stamens, and female flowers have one pistil inside a urn-shaped sac, and neither lack a perianth. One species of the same genus, C. dispalata , can reach a height of 1m and is cultivated to make hats, straw mats, straw sandals, etc. Sometimes this species is simply called sedge. The leaves of the sedge (C. morrowii) have strong fibers that are used to weave backpacks and other items.
