A full-length novel by British author J. Conrad. Published in 1900. Jim, a young navigator who abandoned his passengers to escape a shipwreck, is unable to accept that he is the kind of person he is, and so he hides in the depths of Malay, trying to escape his past by becoming the most respected man in the land. However, due to a cunning plan by the pirate Brown, he ends up betraying the trust of the local people, and he bravely goes to his death. An existential novel, extremely modern in both theme and method, in which the narrator Marlow exposes the beauty of self-idealization and the self-deception and egotism that lie behind it, relentlessly exploring the innermost depths of humanity.
