1834‐1913 English banker, politician, scientist, and author. His real name was John Lubbock. He was created a peer in 1900 and took the title Lord Avery. Born in London, he lived in Down, Kent for most of his life. He developed an interest in natural history at an early age, and was strongly influenced by his father's friend Charles Darwin, who moved to Down in 1841. He went to Eton College, but left when his father became ill. In 1849, just before he was 15, he joined his father's bank, where he showed extraordinary talent and later held many important positions.
