A map showing the state of spatial dispersion and concentration of population. Whether the population is concentrated or dispersed depends on the production mode and natural, social, and economic conditions of the region, so population distribution is one indicator of the conditions of the region. A population distribution map illustrates the distribution of the population, and there are three general types: dot maps, circle area maps, which show the distribution of the population using circles, and sphere maps, which show the distribution of the population using spheres. A population density map, which shows the population map as density per unit area, and a distribution map of population potential are also types of population distribution map.

空間での人口の分散，集積の状態を示すもの。人口が集中するか分散するかの状態は，その地域の生産様式や自然的，社会的，経済的条件によって異なるから，人口分布はその地域の諸条件を知る一つの指標となる。人口の分布状態を図示したものに人口分布図があり，一般にドットマップ，円で表す円積図，球で表す球体図の3種類がある。この人口図を一定の面積に対する密度で表現した人口密度図や人口ポテンシャルの分布図も人口分布図の一種である。
