...There are various theories about the origin of these two elements, but the prototype of the "stone guest" is thought to be a legend scattered around Europe since the 14th century, in which "if you kick a skull lying by the roadside, a ghost will appear and invite you to a meal." The model for the "seducer" is thought to be a man named Don Juan Tenorio, who frequented the court of Pedro I the Cruel (reigned 1350-69) of Spain, but neither of these has a solid historical basis. The play that absorbed these legends and established the character of Don Juan as a literary archetype was the Spanish playwright Tirso de Molina's "The Seducer and the Stone Guest" (1630). Don Juan, the son of a noble family in Seville, cheats on Duchess Isabella, the fisherman's daughter Tisbea, the noblewoman Doña Ana, and the country girl Aminta, one after another, and then kills Don Gonzalo, who tries to take revenge on his daughter Doña Ana.
