Born: July 24, 1828, Saratov Died October 29, 1889, Saratov. Russian novelist and philosopher. Born into a clergyman's family. After graduating from St. Petersburg University, he wrote for the magazine Contemporaries. He sought a path to socialism in Russia, and advocated liberation through armed uprising of the peasants, becoming a representative of the most radical views. He advocated the abolition of serfdom, and was arrested in 1862 and sentenced to life imprisonment. After about 20 years of exile in Siberia, he was allowed to live in Saratov, where he died shortly thereafter. His works include the critique Esteticheskie otnosheniya iskusstva k deistvitel'nost (1855), Ocherki gogolevskogo perioda russkoi literatury (55-56), and the novel What is to be done.
